Over the course of Labour Weekend, people visited Makeshift’s mobile cinema for two at different historic cinema sites in the central city.Picture House debuted as part of FESTA, providing us the pleasure of film and reminding us of the importance of cinemas to an urban environment.
In each location this mobile cinema for two people presented a selection of award-winning and recent short films from New Zealand and around the world. In its own way Picture House acknowledges the loss of 21 cinema screens in the city since the earthquake. With their inventive use of a billboard trailer artist-designer team Heather Hayward and Tessa Peach (Makeshift) have created a piece of mobile architecture for the transitional phase of the city.
Painted by Miranda Parkes, joinery by Matt Jackson, graphic design by Joel Cocks.
Please visit www.makeshiftstudio.co.nz for more information about the work of Heather Hayward and Tessa Peach and for further information on Picture House, as this is an ongoing project.
Makeshift received support from Christchurch City Council, Restart Mall and Resene Paints for Picture House.
