This dairy-fuelled urban food fight was one of FESTA’s most fun and successful events. The date was set. The arena was ready. Thousands of litres of milk were on tap.
This war effort just needed participants – and the session was booked out with those that had registered. Everyone turned up at 11.30am to be inducted into the battle and then enter the arena.
Under the watchful eyes of the commanding officers, the combatants devised ways of launching milk at their foes with cut off milk bottle scoops, buckets and other vessels. When the commentary and music ended, so too did the battle.
Gaby is a Miami-Cuban artist with a sometimes performative style. Keen on political interests, he’ll often use foods as an art medium – making engaging, energetic pieces that provoke. Gaby has exhibited in the USA, Japan, Australia and NZ. He also has a number of local initiatives, collaborations, and social interventions. He continues to be an integral part of keeping the arts flourishing in Christchurch through his involvement in numerous transitional projects.
