Tree Houses for Swamp Dwellers, corner of Gloucester St & Colombo St
Friday 24 October. Tour at 7.30pm, screening starts at 8.30pm
Approximately 20 people wrapped up warm on Friday 24 October to celebrate Christchurch’s cinematic heritage with the Picture Palace Parade tour. More joined in later for the outdoor cinema screening.
Firstly, Charlie Gates, cinephile and senior Press reporter, led a group on an immersive tour of the old cinema sites of Cathedral Square – a walk through history.
This was followed by an outdoor screening of Heavenly Creatures – a great New Zealand film made in Christchurch. The public came along with their chairs, blankets, cushions and picnics for an evening of cinema beneath the stars, right in the heart of our city.
The project recreated scenes from a past era when the square was nightly filled by cinema-goers and was a successful, buzzing urban space. Picture Palace Parade bridged the past and the future!
Thank you to SCAPE and to Blue Pearl Gallery for giving us access to the site and a building to use as a screen! Thank you to Wingnut Productions and the New Zealand Film Commission for permission to screen the film.
